Getting Up To Speed With VFL Life

Each year the Werribee Football Club welcomes a new crop of young men, most of them joining us straight out of the NAB League or after relocating from the country for a crack at state-league footy.

New stipulation that VFL clubs must field six players under the age of 22 each week also means that lists, now more than ever, are likely to include a great number of players that fit that age bracket.

With more than one-third of the Werribee playing list for 2021 made up of personnel 22 and under the club has introduced a player development program for predominately its first to third year players.

The program is designed to bring players up to speed with life at VFL level from a preparation and performance viewpoint while also support individuals with endeavours outside of football.

Football Development Manager Hamish MacInnes said whether players are with Werribee for one season or the majority of their football careers it was important that the club support them both on and off the field.

“It’s providing our younger players with all the learning and understanding to help them not just in their football preparation and performance preparation but also to be able to go away and create good personal habits, mental health strategies and professional habits,” he said.

Development program sessions have taken place both at the club and over zoom this season and have included on-field craft sessions, education in strength and conditioning and nutrition, along with personal and professional development workshops.

“Essentially, we’re aiming to provide our younger players with really good support networks in terms of upskilling them with everything from their on-field craft to recovery, strength and conditioning and nutrition for on-field performance while also focusing on their personal and professional development whether that be work or university," MacInnes said.

"In setting up this program we're hopefully giving them the best opportunities to be the best footballers they can be at this level and hopefully beyond that, as well as providing them with an opportunity to leave our program a better equipped person than when they came in.”

MacInnes said the program tried to mimic those that are provided by AFL clubs across the country.

“You see it at the elite level where clubs want to provide more resources for your younger players to really give them the best opportunity to excel,” he said.

“If you look at the senior players on our list like Sodomaco, Gribble, Hanson and those guys, they know what there are doing and it’s low maintenance with them, we can trust that the time they have away from the club they are doing everything that they need to get themselves ready to play.

“Even in the case of someone like Jake Ricardi who entered the AFL from Werribee and who potentially goes on to have a really successful AFL career, it eventually comes to an end and when it does you’ve got the rest of your life ahead of you."

With the club having quality resources at its disposal in terms of fulltime, part-time and volunteer staff, MacInnes said the program also sets Werribee apart from others at the second-tier level.

“We have an incredible group of volunteers and staff in the football department who have a huge amount of experience and knowledge in all areas so it’s important to utilise what we have to offer,” he said.

“And with the time these guys commit to the club we look at it from the point that we owe these players something.

"Other people their age who are at uni have got time to go out and do internships in their field, but these guys commit their extra time to the club so the least we can do is give back with a platform to help them develop as players and as people.”

No Footy Again After Lockdown Extension

There will be no VFL football played in Melbourne for a second straight week as a result of the Victorian State Government announcing a seven-day extension to the current lockdown.

After having our Round 14 clash with Port Melbourne cancelled, Werribee will now miss its interstate trip to the Gold Coast to play Southport, which was scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 24.

Their will however be three VFL matches played in Queensland this weekend with our Round 15 opponent now set to take on Essendon who are currently in a hub on the Gold Coast.

Due to this latest setback we now wait for confirmation from the AFL on the Round 16 fixture and hope that matches will be able to go ahead if we see the lockdown end next week.

AFL STATEMENT

The AFL has advised all VFL and VFLW Clubs that this weekend’s scheduled matches in Victoria will not proceed as a result of the seven-day extension to the lockdown announced by the Victorian State Government.

All VFL, VFLW, community football matches, training and Auskick will not be permitted to take place in Victoria during this time, as per State Government restrictions.

The health and safety of the community remains the highest priority and we acknowledge the role the VFL and VFLW plays in keeping our community safe.

The AFL has made the decision to proceed with three VFL games in Queensland scheduled for this weekend. Aspley will host the Gold Coast SUNS on Saturday July 24 at 11.00am AEST at Graham Road, Brisbane. Southport will host Essendon on Sunday July 25 at 12.00pm AEST at Fankhauser Reserve, Gold Coast.

The GWS GIANTS will tackle Brisbane on Sunday July 25 at Council Oval, Metricon Stadium at 12.30pm AEST.

All other VFL clubs will not play a match this weekend with the fixture to be reworked.

The rebel VFLW Preliminary Final between Essendon and Geelong will not be played this weekend. The 2021 rebel VFLW Grand Final will not be played before the 2021 NAB AFLW Draft, which is set down for next Tuesday July 27, and the AFL has written to all AFLW clubs to declare that any player drafted must be allowed and encouraged to complete the VFLW season before joining their new team.

The AFL is committed to working through the final two games and awarding a 2021 rebel VFLW Premier.

The fixture will continue to be a week-by-week proposition and the AFL will continue to work with the Victorian Government and Health Officials on finding solutions for these competitions. Match-ups for remaining games will likely be changed to ensure games are played.

AFL Head of Talent Pathways and State League Competitions Tristan Salter said the football community will continue to prepare for games to be played.

“Football is such an important part of so many lives and communities across Victoria, and we want to see footy back as soon as possible,” Mr Salter said.

“The AFL is committed to playing as many games as possible and confirming a finals series for the best performing teams to award the 2021 VFL Premier.”

“A fair balance of home versus away games and match-ups is a challenge for the remainder of the season, but the priority is to play matches.”

Footy Off Due To Latest Lockdown

With a five-day lockdown announced by the Victorian State Government this afternoon the AFL has advised all VFL and VFLW clubs that this weekend’s scheduled matches have been called off.

As a result, our Round 14 match against Port Melbourne, along with two WFC functions will not proceed this weekend. We are hopeful that this latest snap lockdown ends quickly, and football can return next week. In the meantime, stay safe and keep update via our website and social channels.

AFL STATEMENT

The AFL has today advised all VFL and VFLW Clubs that this weekend’s scheduled matches will not proceed as planned as a result of the five-day lockdown announced by the Victorian State Government this afternoon.

The health and safety of the community remains the highest priority and we acknowledge the role the VFL and VFLW plays in keeping our community safe.

Outdoor physical recreation and sport will be closed across Victoria during the five-day lockdown which commences from 11.59pm AEST Thursday July 15 and affects all VFL and VFLW matches scheduled for this weekend.

The community sport restrictions apply to the VFL and rebel VFLW competitions in Victoria.

The AFL has made the decision to fixture a VFL competition bye for all clubs this weekend to provide balance and equality in the remaining fixtured games. VFL games will not proceed in Queensland as scheduled.

The rebel VFLW Preliminary Final between Essendon and Geelong will be postponed on Saturday with implications on the 2021 rebel VFLW Grand Final to be worked through and further details confirmed shortly. The AFL is committed to working through the final two games and awarding a 2021 rebel VFLW Premier.

With both professional and grassroots sports cancelled this weekend, the TAC and AFL Victoria Road Safety Round has been postponed. When sport is back, we'll band together for safer roads.

The fixture will continue to be a week-by-week proposition and the AFL will continue to work with the Victorian Government and Health Officials on finding solutions for these competitions.

The AFL has prepared for this situation and has worked through this challenge before. The inclusion of byes for all VFL clubs provides flexibility with the fixture and allows for adjustments to be made to play the remaining games.

The AFL will continue to meet with all parties and review this decision based on the changing circumstances and advice from government and relevant health departments and medical experts. We will communicate any updates and provide advice in a timely manner.

The AFL would like to thank the VFL and VFLW communities, each club, players and families and all football fans for their continued patience and understanding as we continue to navigate through this pandemic together.

We acknowledge this remains a complicated and rapidly evolving situation but as a football industry we will band together to support each other. This is a reminder that we are all part of a broader society with a responsibility to make sure our community remains safe.

Around The Grounds: Watts Influential In Win

There were more good performances at local level last week with a number of players producing some of their best football for their community clubs while others are having an immediate impact as they return from injury and get back to full fitness.

GEELONG GFOOTBALL LEAGUE

A couple of Werribee players were a part of massive wins as the Geelong Football League resumed after a bye. Darcy Chirgwin was involved in the biggest triumph of the round as St Mary’s disposed of St Albans by 183 points. After returning from injury through the reserves two weeks ago Chirgwin had a strong outing in his first match back with the senior side accumulating 28 disposals and a goal.

Aiden Domic featured in the best for Bell Park who triumphed by 160 points over Grovedale. Domic again played predominately as a midfielder and is settling into his role at stoppages going head-to-head with the best opposition mid. He finished with 25 touches, two goals and five tackles.

Tyler Watts starred for Geelong West who came from behind to defeat Lara by 22 points. The 198cm big-man was influential when moved into the ruck helping flip the momentum in favour of the Giants. Watts took some good contested marks and should have kicked a goal or two, missing three.

Similarly, Phil Moi Moi went goalless after missing a couple of chances for the Giants, however, his tackle pressure was again elite playing forward while having the occasion burst on-ball.

In the same game Lachie Taylor showed more good progress and was among the best players. Taylor continues to play his role well on the outside and show a willingness to support the defence. Emmanuel Ajang also had a solid day starting in the midfield before moving to halfback. He again used the ball well.

Jay Dahlhaus returned for St Mary’s via the reserves on Saturday and was clearly above the level gathering plenty of football while adding a goal in the Saints’ 129-point win over St Albans.

WESTERN REGION FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Liam Holt-Fitz and Archi Manton both had good outings for Yarrviile Seddon however their efforts were in vain as the Eagle suffered a narrow two-point loss to St Albans. Holt-Fitz played his best game since moving down to Melbourne form the Norther Territory which earnt him Local Player of the Week honours. Holt-Fitz found plenty of football and utilised his pace to impact the contest.

Manton had another good day in front of goal with four majors. Manton’s current run of form has seen him kick 16 goals over the past four weeks moving him into third on the goal kicking tally with 29 for the season. James Edmonds was also a steady contributor for the Eagles who have produced some much-improved performances after losing six of their first seven games, many by big margins.

Dan Nielson wasn’t as prominent for Werribee Districts as he has been in recent weeks, but he still managed two goals and several more chances in a 10-point loss to Spotswood. Nielson had a good battle with his direct opponent and competed fiercely every time extra numbers dropped back.

BALLARAT FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Matt Brett was Darley’s best in one of the Devils ‘better showings this season, a 17-point loss to Redan. Having often been used as a key defender Brett played an attacking role on Saturday and did so to great effect. He set up plenty of play, made good decisions and also got forward to kick a goal.

For Melton South Ryan Pendlebury had his typically strong game splitting time between the midfield and down back against East Point. The Panthers were well-beaten but Pendlebury came out on top against his direct opponent, backing his judgement and reading of the play while using the ball well.

OVENS & MURRAY FOOTBALL LEAGUE

Aiden Johnson spent more time in the ruck for Lavington on the weekend after finding the going tough early on at centre half-forward. He provided a good contest in the middle and finished with one goal while also dishing out a couple of handballs to players in space that resulted in goals.

GOLD COAST VFL

Logan Wagener lined up for Gold Coast’s VFL outfit for the second straight week after playing well for the Suns in Round 12. Wagener was quieter this week but collected 13 disposals and had six tackles in a loss to GWS.
