Club Song
From the playing fields of Melbourne
To the stands of Chirnside Park
We will fight out battles to the end
And we will surely leave our mark
We're the Tigers of the VFL
And we sing in harmony
We're the Tigers bold in black and gold
We're the boys from Werribee
Alan Cations secured the colours for the club - black and gold, one of the two on offer at the time. Alan and his cousin Graeme - universally known as ‘Grubby’ - then secured the first set of jumpers from a bloke they knew at Richmond, although not at the great deal they originally thought. Then the issue was a theme song for the new club. Grubby is the man who wrote the words to the club theme song.
“They said we need a theme song, so I wrote one. I thought it needs to be a rollicking song, and I went through a few and came up with one (The Marine’s Hymn). Everyone was happy with it and then low and behold, bloody Adelaide pinched it.”
You can listen to the song, as recorded by Billy Bridge, above.
