At Local Level: Weekly Player Report - May 21

It was a good weekend for Werribee, who returned to the top eight with an away win at Sandringham on Sunday, and at local level, Werribee’s players continue to string together strong performances.

Read how 16 Werribee players performed at local level across eight leagues, including interleague action, in the seventh edition of the 2025 Weekly Player Report.

Ovens & Murray Football Netball League:

Foster Gardiner - North Albury

Foster Gardiner was a standout for North Albury on a tough day, as the Hoppers went down to second-placed Wangaratta by 50 points. Named among the best, Gardiner was his side’s only multiple goal scorer with two majors. He was praised for his hard work all day to keep the ball in North Albury’s forward half, finishing with 15 disposals and six tackles, in a commendable all-round effort in the loss.

Archer Gardiner - North Albury

It was a tougher day for Archer on the wing in the nine-goal loss for the Hoppers. After a strong patch of football the previous month, the side’s ball movement affected the wingmen’s game to limit him to 12 disposals for the day. Still, he maintained his trademark pressure, a consistent feature of the Gardiner twins' game each week.

Ray Murphy - Corowa-Rutherglen

Ray Murphy was named in the best in a strong outing in the midfield as Corowa went down to Wodonga by 20 points. His stoppage work was again a standout, continuing his consistent season after missing the maority of 2024 due to injury, and ended with 15 disposals and four clearances.

Jedd Longmire - Corowa-Rutherglen

Longmire played a key role at the coalface, racking up 18 disposals and six clearances. His voice and leadership around the contest were strong, and he looked dangerous driving out of stoppage playing alongside Ray in Corowa’s midfield.

Ballarat Football Netball League:

Rye Penny - Bacchus Marsh

Penny was one of Bacchus Marsh’s most reliable performers in their narrow six-point loss to Ballarat. In tricky conditions, he provided strong drive off half-back and was assertive in the air, finishing with 20 disposals and six marks, including multiple intercepts, in a well-rounded defensive display.

Joel Cadman - Darley

Cadman continued to build momentum in his second game back from injury, playing a full match in Darley’s 101-point win over Sebastopol. He pushed up the ground with confidence, gathering 21 disposals and hitting the scoreboard with his first goal of the season in a strong two-way performance from the wing.

Isaac Nixon - Bacchus Marsh

Isaac Nixon played his second game back from injury, lining up alongside Rye Penny in Bacchus Marsh’s narrow loss to Ballarat. After a quiet first half, Nixon was shifted to half-back where he provided run and began to have more influence late in the game, but it was not enough as the Cobras fell by six points.

Essendon District Football League:

Hayden Gill - Deer Park

Gill put in a dominant display as Deer Park enjoyed a 145-point win over East Keilor. The forward rucked for most of the game, and stuffed the stat sheet, collecting 23 disposals, 12 contested possessions and five tackles to be named in the best in the big win. Despite the one-sided contest, Gill’s work rate stood out in the tough conditions on Saturday.

Reuben Rode - Greenvale

After being tagged last week, Rode returned to his ball-winning best in Greenvale’s loss to Aberfeldie. The hard-running midfielder worked tirelessly all game, finishing with 24 disposals and seven inside 50s as Greenvale drop to ninth for the season.

Geelong Football Netball League:

Charlie Byrne - Newtown & Chilwell

Charlie Byrne delivered another strong performance in Newtown’s 75-point win over Grovedale, helping them climb to third on the GFNL ladder. He was effective on both sides of the ball, defending well and setting up play with clean ball use as he went at over 70% efficiency from his 21 kicks, and took four intercept marks amongst his seven marks.

Liam Kershaw - St. Joseph's

Kershaw was serviceable in St Joseph’s 43-point win, as they maintained their undefeated start to 2025. In a highly contested game played in tough conditions, the winger collected 14 disposals and five marks, with the youngster continuing to show glimpses of breaking through with more involvement.

Cooper Ward - St. Joseph's

Cooper Ward put together another impressive performance for St Joseph’s, earning a spot in the best after kicking four goals in a big win. The 18-year-old continues to find his feet through the midfield, showing growing confidence and impact around the ball.

Western Football Netball League:

Wil Kliszewski - Interleague

Wil Kliszewski continued his impressive run of form, representing the Western Football League in their interleague win over the Southern League at Melbourne Avalon Airport Oval. The young key forward was a standout, taking several strong contested marks and having four to five shots on goal, capping off another outstanding performance in what has been a strong start to 2025.

Tom Stapleton - Interleague

The young Parkside ruckman also represented the WFNL in the interleague win at Werribee’s home ground. Playing as the second ruck, he played his role well and made a solid contribution to the team’s impressive performance.

Murray Football League:

Fergus Pinnuck - Cobram

Ferg Pinnuck was named among the best as the second-placed Cobram fell to Tongala. Splitting his time between midfield and half-forward, Pinnuck was a lively target inside 50, kicking two of his side’s nine goals. He also used the ball well when pushing up the ground, in just his second game of the year.

Goulburn Valley Football League:

Dom Gugliotti - Mooroopna

Dom Gugliotti fought hard in a tough day for Mooroopna, who went down to Kyabram by 70 points. In a solid individual performance, Dom Gugliotti defended well and finished with 17 disposals and four marks.

Werribee Return to Winners' List With Win Away From Home

Werribee has returned to the winners' list with a convincing win over Sandringham on Sunday.

Playing away from home, Werribee made a strong start and never looked back, piling on 17 goals to run out 17.10 (112) to 9.7 (61) winners.

Flynn Young continued his outstanding start to 2025 with a dominant display, finishing with three goals and 20 disposals.

Forwards Hudson Garoni (4 goals, 17 disposals) and Zac Banch (2 goals, 10 score involvements) also maintained their strong form, while Cooper Whyte starred in the midfield with a career-high 25 disposals. Down back, Jesse Clark and Louis Pinnuck were influential with eight and seven intercept possessions respectively.

Werribee got off to the perfect start, with Dom Brew kicking the opening goal, and his first of the 2025 season, just two minutes into the match. Usual suspects Hudson Garoni and Jay Dahlhaus also hit the scoreboard early, before a long bomb from Flynn Young, launched from 70 metres out, gave Werribee a 19-point buffer at quarter time.

It was then a dominant second quarter from Werribee which put the game beyond reach at half-time.

Young repeated the feat with another goal from well beyond the arc in the opening minute of the term, before Werribee added six more majors before the main break, including goals to forwards Zac Banch, Jack Riding and Harry Maguire.

Dom Brew snapped a goal to match his career-best tally with two goals, while Hudson Garoni also drilled home his second of the day, extending his streak to 31 consecutive games with a goal.

Debutant Harry Miller, Werribee FC’s 977th player, snapped truly late in the second quarter for his first career goal, sparking a full-team celebration in the forward line.

Sandringham came out strong after halftime, kicking the first two goals of the third term inside two minutes. From there, the game entered a stalemate, with neither side scoring for over 20 minutes, with veteran defender Louis Pinnuck standing tall, collecting three intercept marks for the quarter.

Anthony Depasquale eventually broke the deadlock, slotting a set shot from a tight angle late in the term to restore Werribee's momentum and extend the margin to 39 points at the final change.

Werribee finished strongly, booting another five goals in the last quarter to seal a 51-point win heading into the bye with momentum and a return to the top eight.

Garoni's four-goal haul sees him move to third in the Frosty Miller Medal race at the end of Round 8, while Maguire’s goal after the siren took his tally to 10 goals from his first five games in yellow and black.

Krista Woodroffe Strengthens Werribee’s Community Team

Werribee’s community program has gone from strength to strength this 2025 season with the addition of Krista Woodroffe to the administration team in an expanded role.

Krista, who joins as Community Coordinator, brings a wealth of experience across multiple levels of the game. A former VFLW player with Geelong and current coach at Geelong Grammar School, Krista previously worked in a casual role with North Melbourne as a Schools Female Participation Officer, an opportunity that first connected her with Werribee and kick-started her career in football administration.

She later became the AFL Goldfields region’s first female Football Manager, and has also held roles with the AFL as Female Talent Coordinator and Games Development Officer.

Krista’s appointment has been instrumental in bringing Werribee’s partnership with North Melbourne to life. The three-year agreement has seen North Melbourne’s VFLW side rebranded as the North Melbourne Werribee Kangaroos, playing up to four games per season at Avalon Airport Oval, with two games already confirmed for 2025.

Werribee will also increase its involvement in delivering North Melbourne’s Next Generation Academy program in Wyndham, identifying and developing talented young multicultural and Indigenous footballers, a collaboration that first began in 2023.

Speaking on the new partnership, Krista said, “It’s incredibly exciting for WFC to formalise this partnership with the NMFC VFLW and Next Generation Academy programs. This collaboration opens up a clear and inspiring pathway for aspiring male and female footballers in Wyndham to reach the highest levels of the game."

She added, "It perfectly complements our existing VFL team and the strong community programs we’re so proud to manage. It’s a real step forward for WFC and the future of football in our region."

While the North Melbourne partnership has been a major part of her role, Krista has also assisted Shaggy across all aspects of the club’s community programs, from planning and administration to on-the-ground delivery.

General Manager of Business Operations Justin Abrams said; “Krista’s extended appointment to the WFC Community team has been a great decision. Krista has actively had a huge influence with the North Melbourne relationship and involved with the AFLW and Next Gen Academy. Krista plays a pivotal role with the implementation and delivery of all WFC Community and school activity within the Wyndham region.”

Abrams added that Krista has been a huge support to Community Manager Majok and that the community team plays a vital role in strengthening Werribee’s connection both on and off the field within the local community.

Majok, who returned to the club as Community Manager in 2023, oversaw a record-breaking year in 2024, reaching 7,622 participants, including over 5,500 school students across the club’s community programs.

Speaking on Krista’s impact, Ngong said: “Having Krista come on board has been a great addition. She’s brought a fresh perspective, new ideas, and, importantly, a wealth of experience as we continue to show why we have the best community program in the VFL.”

Round 8: Werribee vs Sandringham (Away)

After three consecutive games at home, Werribee is back on the road this Sunday for a Round 8 clash against Sandringham at Trevor Barker Beach Oval.

The 2:05pm bounce marks Werribee’s first away game in Victoria since Round 2, with interstate trips to Southport and Sydney bookending that match in Rounds 1 and 4.

Werribee will be out to respond after last weekend’s defeat to Box Hill in the Beyond Blue Cup. Despite a spirited seven-goal final quarter, the side fell short by 16 points after the Hawks dominated the first three terms.

Sandringham enters Sunday’s match sitting 19th on the ladder with a 1-5 record to start the 2025 season.

They broke through for their first win three weeks ago with an upset over fifth-placed Footscray and have remained competitive since, falling to Carlton by 18 points last week at IKON Park.

The two sides have met just once since 2019, with Werribee cruising to a 76-point win in 2023. That day, Shaun Mannagh kicked seven goals, Michael Sodomaco slotted four, and Harry Grintell booted a career-best four majors.

Werribee members heading to Trevor Barker Beach Oval this Sunday can score half-price tickets via this link.

The first bounce is at 2:05pm, with the game also streamed live and free on the AFL app and AFL.com.au. Click here to watch the game live.
