At Local Level: Weekly Player Report - May 28

With Werribee enjoying a third consecutive win in the VFL with a 69-point defeat over North Melbourne, read about how the next in line travelled at local level. With the Geelong Football Netball League having a league-wide bye a number of Werribee’s own had the week off, none the less 10 players played amongst five leagues on the weekend, and this is how their numbers stacked up:

Geelong District Football Netball League:

Daly Andrews - Werribee Centrals
Andrews was a class above in his return from knee injury in Werribee Centrals win in the GDFNL. Despite restricted game time, Andrews was on from the very start of the game, picking up 25 disposals, at an incredibly efficient 88%. Andrews also had 8 clearances, 10 contested possessions and hit the scoreboard with a goal too.

Western Football Netball League:

Michael Selsby – Yarraville Seddon Eagles
Selsby continued his good form in the Eagles one-point win over Altona. In the midfield he picked up another 25 disposals, with ten contested possessions and his stoppage work was a highlight of his afternoon. Selsby also had six marks, five tackles and eight inside 50s.

Sam Azzi – Yarraville Seddon Eagles
Azzi had another strong game in Yarraville’s backline in the thrilling victory over Altona. Azzi had a strong game in the air with five 1%ers, while also picking up 19 disposals at an effective 79%.

Essendon District Football League:

Reuben William – Keilor
In Keilor’s big win over East Keilor William got time on ball as well as backline and was strong in the contest and clean over the ball. William kicked his first goal of the season, took three marks and went at an efficient 88% for the match.

Cam McLeod – Aberfeldie
McLeod played a mixture of wing and half-back in Aberfeldie’s win over Essendon Doutta Stars. He picked up 12 disposals, which he used at 75% efficiency, while grabbing 5 marks, laying 5 tackles and going inside 50 in a good all-round game.

Victorian Amatuer Football Association:

Sam Conway – Melbourne Univeristy Blacks
Conway played his best game for the Uni Black’s for 2024 thus far. He was strong in the ruck, whilst also competing well at ground level, gathering 16 disposals, which include 14 contested possessions and eight clearances.

Zayne Galea – Williamstown CYMS
Galea had his best game for the season in a tight three-point loss to Old Ivanhoe. He picked up 21 disposals in the backline, at an efficient 86%, and took eight marks, including a number of intercept marks.

Ballarat Football Netball League:

Joel Cadman – Darley
While Darley lost their second consecutive game, Cadman had good numbers in the forward line. He gathered 19 disposals, with eight marks and seven contested possessions.

Jamie Quick – North Ballarat
Quick was showing signs of carrying on his good form, however an ankle injury ended his day early. Despite the restricted gametime, Quick was able to kick two goals, gather ten disposals and take a couple of marks.

Northern Football Netball League:

Darcy Bennett – Banyule
Bennett continues to string together consecutive games coming off his hamstring injury in the preseason matches. He was again strong in the ruck, while taking three marks and going inside 50 three times in Banyule’s win.

Convincing Win Over North Melbourne on Past Players Day

Werribee have made it three wins in a row, defeating North Melbourne by 69 points at home on Sunday.

In a special day for the club celebrating Past Players and Officials Day, as well as Sir Doug Nicholls Round, Werribee put in a dominant four-quarter effort finishing on top with a 13.21.99 to 4.6.30 victory.

Jack Henderson, who has thrived in his more prominant midfield role this season, got Werribee off to a flyer, booting the first two goals. Jay Dahlhaus also hit the scoreboard late in the first quarter to make it  a 21-point lead at quarter time.

Werribee dominated the second quarter but missed opportunities in front of goal meant just a 31-point lead into the main break despite having 16 scoring shots to five.

Riley Bice ended a run of six consecutive behinds to start the second quarter with a booming goal from 50 metres out. A converted Harry Grintell set shot quickly followed before North Melbourne kicked their first goal of the game right on the half-time siren.

Dom Brew led the way in the first half with 18 disposals, Jack Henderson had 12 to go with his two first-quarter goals, while Riley Bice also gathered 11 disposals in the first half.

Werribee’s leading scorers Hudson Garoni and Jay Dahlhaus carried on their goal kicking form in the third quarter. Garoni certainly stamped his presence in the forward line taking five shots on goal in the term. However, Jack Riding took over the third quarter, kicking two goals in thirty seconds to go into the last break, and hold a resounding 54-point lead with one quarter to play.

Riding continued his terrific form of the last month and continues to lead the VFL in goal assists and score assists.

The last quarter was a scrappy affair, with only two goals kicked but Garoni and Dahlhaus, again, each hit the scoreboard to end three goals apiece and both 16 for the season.

Stand in captain Dom Brew ended the day with a game-high 33 disposals, including 21 contested possessions and 13 clearances in another dominant performance. Jack Henderson played his best game for the season with 24 disposals along with his two goals.

Riley Bice and Bior Malual provided plenty of run and carry all day, gathering 26 and 24 disposals respectively, with each taking ten marks and hitting the scoreboard.

Nathan Cooper in his 50th game stood tall in the backline once again locking down North Melbourne’s inform key forwards, whilst also having four intercepts and five spoils himself.

Ian Wilson: Upcoming WFC Past Players and Big Freeze

“Boys, we are all getting on and from my experience in football the biggest thing I can pass on to you is that too much emphasis is put on premierships and individual awards. The best thing about the game is the people you meet along the way. Make the most of those relationships, because they are what matters most.” Donald McDonald

These are perhaps the most intelligent words our former coach has ever said! It was part of a speech he made to the Werribee players when Mick Barlow took over as coach and he hit the nail on the head.

Perhaps it’s because we are getting older and starting to sense our own mortality but reunions do become more special as time quickly advances.

This wasn’t the case early on for me. I was a bit reticent thinking no one would remember me or I wouldn’t remember their names but I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Once you hear a characteristic laugh or see someone’s familiar face, suddenly the dormant chemicals in your brain kick off again. It’s instant recognition and the ‘man-hugs’ begin.

I think we all forget just how much time we invested at the footy club. We all worked or studied before putting in long hours training. There wasn’t much science to the training. The only philosophy was, ‘train longer and harder and we’ll get better’.

I can’t remember any bad relationships. Maybe there was the odd undesirable who came through the club over the six years I was there, but on the whole Werribee FC was a great place to play and have fun.

So many great characters came through the doors. Werribee is a destination club, especially now with its facilities but in the ‘olden days’ when the club had to compete in the VFA first division, the club had to source players outside of town from 1989-on in order to be competitive. Geographically this could prove to be challenging for some.

The boys from Geelong such as Nick Walsh, Greg Chapman and Stephen Sells weren’t just excellent players but they were often the last to leave the social club. They left a legacy of behaviours that decades of future Geelong players have been happy to replicate!

Other players who drove long distances and fell in love with the club were Robbie Morris, Richard Geary and the ‘Beanbag With Legs’, Frank Lesiputty. You’ll still see Robbie and Richard at reunions having driven from Deniliquin and Yarrawonga respectively.

You never know who you’ll bump into at a PPO day. For instance I had a strange interaction at the 2019 event. We set up at the Hungry Jacks end of AAO and I scored some Furphy cartons from a mate to raffle off.

As the players came in, I feverishly wrote down their names on raffle tickets. I had my head down and asked the next player their name. “Justin Bailey”, came the reply. I stopped in my tracks immediately, looked up and it all came flooding back to me.

“You knocked me out just before half time in the ’93 Grand Final didn’t you?” I asked. “Yep, that’s right.” “Nice to meet you” I said. “Nice to meet you too” he replied. A very VFA exchange! Justin came across to Werribee from Port Melbourne in the mid 90’s.

The 2024 Past Players will be this Sunday at AAO versus North Melbourne. There is a Presidents Luncheon available for $50 at 10am with guest speaker Mick Barlow. From 12pm the PPO function will be on the hill. $10 gets you a stubbie holder and a drink. Whatever happens, you’re guaranteed a gut laugh or two.

Michael McMaster has organised a bus leaving Kardinia Café at 9am. BYO drinks for the trip. A big thanks to Mixer, Adam Taylor and Zach Thornton for setting up the day this year.

Another event to put in your diaries is The Big Freeze Day on Saturday June 8 versus Frankston. The game starts at 2.05pm but there will be fundraising activities for Fight MND beforehand. Keep an eye on the club’s website as more details come to hand.

Neale Daniher played a huge part in his one year at Werribee, helping the club to reach its first ever grand final in 1991. Despite two dodgy knees and being dragged out of retirement, he was an inspirational player on the ground and a gentleman off it.

Past players Michael McMaster and Daryl Fenton along with former coach Leon Harris have been conducting lunches for Neil since he returned from Perth with his diagnosis of MND.

They have been hugely successful and Neale has always been there with that dry sense of humour.

I remember one lunch when Leon Harris proudly announced to us that he came runner up in the VFL’s Best First Year Player award of (I think) 1979. Someone asked who came first.

Leon pointed to Neale, who paused and with the timing of a seasoned comedian said, “Big gap between first and second.”

You can grab your Big Freeze 10th Anniversary beanie at any Coles or Bunnings and join the fun on the 8th of June at AAO. Go Tiges!
