Werribee Unveils First Diversity Guernsey

19 June 2024

Werribee celebrates Diversity Day in our Round 13 clash with Williamstown and is proud to unveil our inaugural diversity guernsey designed by local artist John Mathet.

23 year old John Mathet is a prominent figure in Wyndham's artistic scene, notably winning the People’s Choice Award for the 2019 and 2020 Wyndham Art Prize. South Sudanese born Mathet moved to Australia in 2014 has been settled in the City of Wyndham for seven years.

The collaboration between Werribee FC and John Mathet for the diversity guernsey originated through Junubi. Junubi is an organisation that serves as a support system for young people in the South Sudanese community and their families, linking them to activities and essential services while promoting cultural diversity and community engagement in Wyndham. Mathet's involvement with Junubi began when his mural paintings at the Wyndham Community Education Centre earned him recognition.

Reflecting on the design process, John aimed to create a visual representation that would unify the many cultures of Wyndham, one of Melbourne's fastest-growing and diverse areas. "Sport is a universal language that brings people together," Mathet explained. "Regardless of our backgrounds, when we support our team, we unite."

The prominent feature in the design is the two hands, which not only symbolises unity but also their integral role to the sport of football. Within the artwork, smaller hands in different colors represent the diversity of ages, races, and religions within the community. Each fingerprint within the design signifies individual identity, while collectively illustrating the strength found in diversity.

Within the palm of a hand sits a kangaroo and Australian flag, with Mathet explaining that "no matter our origins, we all share the identity of being Australian."

"Through footy, we unite to celebrate this shared identity."

Ahead of Diversity Day, Werribee’s General Manager in Business Operations Justin Abrams said “Our club has always embraced the diversity of the Wyndham community. This is another great opportunity to showcase that via our jumper and reinforce the message that football helps break down barriers and embraces all cultures and backgrounds.”

Werribee will face off against arch-rival Williamstown for the second time this season on Saturday at Avalon Airport Oval. The showdown is always intense but with both sides in the top six a crucial spot in the top four with only seven games remaining for the season adds to the contest.
