Slow start costs Werribee against the Tiges
28 July 2025

Werribee was unable to make it two wins in a row, falling to Richmond by 45 points in their penultimate home game of 2025.
A costly first quarter saw the visitors open up a 34-point lead at the first break, with Richmond maintaining control from there to claim a 15.9 (99) to 7.11 (53) victory at Melbourne Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday.
Mace Cousins stood out in defence for the home side, finishing with a season-high 20 disposals and eight marks while also performing strongly on one of the competition’s top small forwards, Massimo Raso.
Sam Conway had a career-high 60 hitouts, extending his streak of 50-plus hitout games to six and moving to the top of the competition for total hitouts. Sam also hit the scoreboard with a second-quarter goal, his first since Round 12, 2022, breaking a 1,144 day goalless drought.
Hudson Garoni got Werribee off to a fast start, soccering through the opening goal inside the first three minutes to extend his remarkable streak to 37 consecutive games with a goal.
But from there, Richmond took control, piling on six unanswered goals to dominate the opening term.
Their momentum carried into the second quarter, adding the first goal of the term before Sam Conway’s set shot midway through finally broke the run. Jack Riding added another, but Richmond maintained the upper hand, taking a 38-point lead into the main break.
Werribee showed signs of a fightback in the third, opening with back-to-back set shot goals from Harry Miller and Hudson Garoni, both from the same spot. Richmond responded through Tom Ferguson’s second, and from there, the scoring dried up. Only one more major was kicked for the rest of the quarter, with Garoni slotting his third late in the term.
Richmond held a 25-point lead heading into the final quarter.
Much like the opening term, Richmond controlled the contest finishing 45-point winners. The visitors kicked four unanswered goals to start the final quarter, before Hudson Garoni added his fourth of the day, making it back-to-back four-goal hauls. Richmond responded with a fifth for the term, sealing Werribee’s tenth loss of the 2025 season.
Among the standouts also included premiership players Jack Riding and Louis Pinnuck, who led all players on the ground with 35 and 30 disposals, respectively. Foster Gardiner also stood tall in defence, finishing with 13 disposals and six marks.
