AGM Wrap: Stalwarts Celebrated, Future Thinking

The 2019 Werribee Football Club AGM was an ideal forum for the club to reflect on and appreciate the achievements of the past season and to acknowledge the contribution of some seasoned campaigners plus outline some exciting possibilities for the future.

In addition to the presentation of the 2019 financial and annual reports, the AGM also saw Martin Carter (President), Ian Hovey (board member), Peter Mayall (board member) and Bernadette Innes (board member) all re-instated to their positions on new two-year terms, as well as the nomination of a new director in Jack Elliott, a talent manager at TLA Worldwide.

They are joined by existing board members Roland Brohaska, Jamie Taylor and Michael Wasley.

Unfortunately the meeting also saw the end of an era, with two long standing board members stepping down. David Lyons - after 16 years as finance director - and Jim Hudson - after 13 years as club director - have resigned, but will continue to assist within sub committees. Also departing the board is Sam Hunter, who was instrumental in assisting with governance and structures over the past two years.

The continuing support of Ballan Holden was also highlighted as Tino Ballan was presented with the keys to the door of the Werribee Football Club in acknowledgement of the record 21st year as major sponsor.

Financially, the club announced an operating loss of $50,215 for the financial year ended 31 October 2019. Although it ends a run of 15 consecutive profits, Werribee president Martin Carter confirmed the loss was largely due to a change in accounting policy from the auditor, and that revenues are stable and expenses well controlled:

“As stated within our annual report, the challenges to compete within the VFL - on and off field - continue to rise and although we have announced a loss after depreciation for the first time since 2003, I know that our members, sponsors and local community will continue to rally behind us.”

The club also outlined its strategy to enhance and strengthen the club’s brand with the assistance of all stakeholders to ensure the identity and viability of the Werribee Football Club within the VFL landscape and the City of Wyndham.

CEO Mark Penaluna concluded proceedings: “It was terrific to see our loyal members at our AGM. They are the very fabric of our existence.”

Please note: The positions of vice president, secretary, and treasurer for 2020 will be appointed at the upcoming board meeting.
