North Ballarat gun Jack Riding secures VFL spot

Werribee has had more success with its pre-season trials, signing North Ballarat standout Jack Riding. 

The 22-year-old utility enjoyed a dominant 2022 season capped by selection in the Ballarat Football League Team of the Year after kicking 37 goals in 16 games. 

Riding topped the goal kicking for the Roosters and later added the club’s senior best and fairest award to his list of accolades. 

“Jack was identified by our recruiters and was invited to our trial day at the start of pre-season,” Werribee football manager Mark Micallef said. 

“He really impressed the coaching staff with his application and has quickly adapted to learning our style of play. 

“He’s got a nice left foot, is damaging forward of the play and around goal, but also has the versatility to play a number of positions on the ground.”

Ex-Southport small forward Selsby signs on

Small forward Michael Selsby has swapped Queensland for Victoria signing with Werribee after two seasons with Southport. 

Selsby arrives at Avalon Airport Oval after 20 appearances for the Sharks having joined the Queensland standalone from the Gold Coast Suns Academy.

The 21-year-old played in Southport’s first 11 games last season before a shoulder injury kept him on the sidelines until late in the campaign. 

Werribee football manager Mark Micallef said the club was delighted to add Selsby.   

“We’re really pleased to have Michael join us, after being involved in a successful program at Southport over recent years he knows what is required to succeed at this level,” he said.   

“He’s a North Queensland boy who has really embraced the move to Victoria and we’re excited to have him with his ability to find the ball in dangerous positions and finish in front of goal.”

Ruckman Kobe Annand signs after big year in GFL

Werribee has signed talented young ruckman Kobe Annand ahead of the 2023 season.

The 21-year-old from Ocean Grove played 17 games this year with North Shore in the Geelong Football League claiming best on ground honours eight times.

The 200cm big-man finished the season with the fourth most hit-outs in the GFL and was runner-up in the Seagulls’ best and fairest count.

Having trained with the club at the back end of last season, Werribee football manager Mark Micallef said Annand was deserving of a contract.

“Kobe’s really competitive and strong at the contest and plays the game the way it should be played, at high intensity,” he said.

“From what we saw this season we think Kobe has really high scope and we’re excited to give him the opportunity to be on a VFL list and can’t wait to see what he brings in 2023.”

Ovens & Murray standout Sam Azzi joins Werribee

A proven recruiting ground has delivered a sought-after key defender for Werribee with Sam Azzi joining the club from North Albury.

Azzi played alongside co-captain Dom Brew at the Hoppers with his signing adding to the long list of players Werribee has recruited from the Ovens and Murray Football League.

The 196cm defender finished runner-up in North Albury’s best and fairest this season after tallying the second most marks and third most contested marks in the O&M.

With several VFL club’s showing interest in Azzi, Werribee football manager Mark Micallef said the club was thrilled to secure his signature.

“We think Sam has a bright future and we’re excited to see what he can develop into at this level,” he said.

“We’ve recruited him as a key defender but he’s a very versatile player having previous played up forward and on the wing.”

Noah Lever latest ex-Falcon to arrive at Werribee

Werribee has lured another ex-Geelong Falcon to Avalon Airport Oval with Noah Lever crossing from Williamstown.  

Lever made his VFL debut in round seven this year and impressed with his work around the contest in 10 games for the Seagulls.  

The 20-year-old midfielder has the ability to win the ball on both the inside and outside and averaged five tackles per game in 2022.  

Werribee football manager Mark Micallef said the club was delighted to have Lever sign. 

“Noah is a player we had on our radar going back beyond the past year,” he said.  

“He’s a person of impeccable character and is really wanting to build something special with his new teammates, a number of which he’s known for a while.  

“Noah displayed some really good attributes at VFL level this year and, as a versatile midfielder with the ability to work from contest to contest, we’re excited to have him come on board.”
