01 August 2024
Werribee’s final home game of the 2024 Smithy’s VFL home and away season puts the first-placed Tigers against Southport at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday.
Werribee returns home after a come-from-behind victory over the Borough in Round 18, securing the club's eleventh consecutive win.
Southport enters the clash sitting sixth on the ladder with a 10-6 record. However, after losing three of their last four games, including their most recent outing being a 25-point defeat to Sydney at home, they'll be eager to bounce back.
This will be the second meeting between the teams this season. In their Round 2 clash at Fankhauser Reserve, Angus Hicks kicked the winning goal in his club debut, securing a thrilling three-point victory for Werribee. This match marks Southport's seventh game in Victoria this season and their first return to Avalon Airport Oval since Round 3, 2022.
This clash with Southport will be Werribee's tenth and final home game of the home-and-away season. The club has enjoyed strong success on home turf this season, boasting an impressive 8-1 record in front of the Werribee faithful.

TEAM NEWS:
Three changes have been made to the side that defeated Port Melbourne at ETU Stadium last Saturday. Cam McLeod comes in for his first game of the 2024 season after an impressive patch of form with Aberfeldie in the EDFL. McLeod will play his third game for Werribee after making his club debut in Round 7 last year against Essendon, his former club before making the switch from the Bombers to Avalon Airport Oval ahead of the 2023 season.
Matt Keast and Michael Selsby also return to the side to take on the Sharks. Keast is set to play his fifth game of the season, after a breakout season saw him play 16 games last in 2023. He comes back to the side for his first appearance since an injury against North Melbourne in Round 9.
Michael Selsby returns for his second game of the season, after being a late-in for the Coburg clash in Round 16, which saw the small forward kick two goals. Selsby's second appearance of 2024 will come against his former side, playing 20 games for Southport across 2021 and 2022 before signing for Werribee ahead of the 2023 season.
Jaelen Pavlidis, Jack Riding and Jake Smith all miss through injuries.
