Champion midfielder Dom Brew Celebrates 100 Games
06 June 2024
Dom Brew will become the first Werribee player of the 2024 season to reach the 100 games milestone when he runs out in Saturday’s Round 11 clash against Frankston.
Brew becomes the latest player to reach 100 club games, and achieve Werribee Life Membership.
Brew’s form has continued from his career best 2023 campaign where he won his first Bruce Montgomery Trophy and earnt VFL Team of the Year honours.
Earlier this year the inside midfielder was named Victorian captain as the Big V returned to state of origin footy against the SANFL. Brew is also currently sitting second in the Rebel Coaches MVP Award, two votes behind Geelong’s Mitch Hardie.
Brew arrived at Werribee in 2017 from North Albury where he shared the playing field with Shaun Mannagh. Their coach, former AFL star Jason Akermanis, advised the pair to give VFL a go.
He broke into the senior side Round 9 2017 debuting against the Northern Bullants and making an immediate impact for John Lamont’s side, picking up 22 disposals, seven clearances and laying nine tackles. Brew never looked back after that point, playing the remainder of the season and averaging 17 disposals and 12 tackles.
When long-standing captain Michael Sodomaco stood down as a leader after seven years of captaincy following the 2021 campaign, Dom Brew was voted co-captain alongside Tom Gribble for the 2022 season. Coach Michael Barlow at the time saying that “In all my time in football clubs I’ve never seen someone invest in others as much as Dom Brew does”. Brew has since remained in the leadership group, being named vice-captain under Nick Coughlan for 2023 and 2024.
Senior coach Jimmy Allan spoke highly of the impact that Brew has had on the club in the short time they have worked together; “He lives and breathes the Werribee Football Club. He epitomises the trademark values of the club, and sets the standard every training session and game.”
On the eve of the milestone, former coach, and teammate, Michel Barlow spoke volumes of Brew’s character; describing him as “A joy to coach and a joy to play with”. Adding that “No one’s been more significant to the on-field success in the last couple of seasons.”
Werribee will take on Frankston for Brew’s 100th match in a Round 11 clash at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday. With no local football across the King’s Birthday weekend, entry will be free, and the first bounce is at 2:05pm.
