Convincing Win Over North Melbourne on Past Players Day
27 May 2024
Werribee have made it three wins in a row, defeating North Melbourne by 69 points at home on Sunday.
In a special day for the club celebrating Past Players and Officials Day, as well as Sir Doug Nicholls Round, Werribee put in a dominant four-quarter effort finishing on top with a 13.21.99 to 4.6.30 victory.
Jack Henderson, who has thrived in his more prominant midfield role this season, got Werribee off to a flyer, booting the first two goals. Jay Dahlhaus also hit the scoreboard late in the first quarter to make it a 21-point lead at quarter time.
Werribee dominated the second quarter but missed opportunities in front of goal meant just a 31-point lead into the main break despite having 16 scoring shots to five.
Riley Bice ended a run of six consecutive behinds to start the second quarter with a booming goal from 50 metres out. A converted Harry Grintell set shot quickly followed before North Melbourne kicked their first goal of the game right on the half-time siren.
Dom Brew led the way in the first half with 18 disposals, Jack Henderson had 12 to go with his two first-quarter goals, while Riley Bice also gathered 11 disposals in the first half.
Werribee’s leading scorers Hudson Garoni and Jay Dahlhaus carried on their goal kicking form in the third quarter. Garoni certainly stamped his presence in the forward line taking five shots on goal in the term. However, Jack Riding took over the third quarter, kicking two goals in thirty seconds to go into the last break, and hold a resounding 54-point lead with one quarter to play.
Riding continued his terrific form of the last month and continues to lead the VFL in goal assists and score assists.
The last quarter was a scrappy affair, with only two goals kicked but Garoni and Dahlhaus, again, each hit the scoreboard to end three goals apiece and both 16 for the season.
Stand in captain Dom Brew ended the day with a game-high 33 disposals, including 21 contested possessions and 13 clearances in another dominant performance. Jack Henderson played his best game for the season with 24 disposals along with his two goals.
Riley Bice and Bior Malual provided plenty of run and carry all day, gathering 26 and 24 disposals respectively, with each taking ten marks and hitting the scoreboard.
Nathan Cooper in his 50th game stood tall in the backline once again locking down North Melbourne’s inform key forwards, whilst also having four intercepts and five spoils himself.
