Werribee’s VFL finals campaign got underway on Saturday, with the side falling 13 points short against a Box Hill outfit featuring 17 AFL-listed players.

At local level, six Werribee-listed players also began their finals campaigns across five competitions.

Nash King played a crucial role in Wallan’s remarkable comeback victory, while Tom Webster and Wil Kliszewski both stood tall in attack to help their sides advance.

This weekend will also see Webster’s Newcomb face Archer Hanegraaf’s Geelong Amateurs, while Kliszewski and Yarraville Seddon will take on Werribee Districts for a place in the WFNL Grand Final.

Riddell District Football Netball League:

Nash King - Wallan
King delivered when it mattered most as Wallan produced a remarkable comeback to defeat Kyneton by three points and avoid a straight-sets finals exit. The Magpies trailed by 34 points 17 minutes into the final term before storming home, with King collecting 11 disposals and six inside 50s in the last quarter alone. After a quieter first half by his high standards, the midfielder showed composure in the high-pressure contest and played a major role in the comeback. He finished with 22 disposals at 73% efficiency, including eight contested possessions, along with five marks, three clearances, nine inside 50s, seven score involvements and five tackles. King was named in Wallan’s best players, with the Magpies now set to face Riddell in a preliminary final this weekend.

Bellarine Football Netball League:

Tom Webster - Newcomb
Webster was an excellent focal point in attack as Newcomb recorded a commanding 49-point elimination final victory over Barwon Heads. The key forward played his role superbly, collecting 20 disposals, including 11 contested possessions, along with five marks, five inside 50s, 10 score involvements and two goals. He also provided support in the ruck with five hitouts. Newcomb will now face Archer Hanegraaf’s Geelong Amateurs in a semi final this weekend.

Archer Hanegraaf - Geelong Amateurs
Hanegraaf battled hard through the midfield as Geelong Amateurs suffered a 32-point qualifying final loss to Torquay. In a high-pressure contest, he collected 23 disposals at 70% efficiency, including 13 contested possessions, along with six clearances, four inside 50s and four tackles. Hanegraaf remained strong at the contest throughout the afternoon. The defeat leaves Geelong Amateurs with a second chance, setting up a semi final against Tom Webster’s Newcomb.

Western Football Netball League:

Wil Kliszewski - Yarraville Seddon
Kliszewski provided a strong target in attack as Yarraville Seddon defeated Caroline Springs by 18 points. He finished with 12 disposals at 75% efficiency, including five contested possessions, along with eight marks, three of which were contested, six score involvements and two goals. Kliszewski competed well in the air, halved contests he could not win and showed an improved work rate throughout a solid performance. He was named in the best players as Yarraville Seddon kicked three unanswered goals in the final term to secure the victory. They will now face minor premiers Werribee Districts for a place in the WFNL Grand Final.

Goulburn Valley Football Netball League:

Reuben Rode - Kyabram
Rode contributed as Kyabram kept its season alive with a 12-point elimination final victory over the Shepparton Swans. Playing a mixture of midfield and forward, he collected 11 disposals, including seven contested possessions, along with two marks, two clearances, three inside 50s and a goal. After a quiet opening half, Rode became more involved and played an important role in the second half. Kyabram will now face Echuca in a semi final this weekend.

Essendon District Football League:

Tom Cappellari - Essendon Doutta Stars
Cappellari battled hard as Essendon Doutta Stars’ season came to an end with a 70-point elimination final loss to Maribyrnong Park. Starting on the wing before moving to half back, he collected 16 disposals at 81% efficiency, six marks, four intercept possessions, seven inside 50s and four score involvements while also kicking a goal. Cappellari was more influential after moving into defence and continued to give his all despite the difficult result.
