Werribee’s finals campaign continues this weekend with an all-standalone semi final against Port Melbourne this Saturday.

The clash will be Werribee’s second final in as many weeks at Melbourne Avalon Airport Oval, with the game to get underway at 12:05pm.

Werribee enters the do-or-die contest following a 13-point qualifying final loss to Box Hill last Saturday.

Facing a Hawks side featuring 17 AFL-listed players, Werribee fought back from an 18-point half-time deficit to lead by five points at three-quarter time. However, Box Hill regained control in the final term to secure a 16.13.109 to 15.6.96 victory.

Anthony Depasquale continued his outstanding form with a match-high five goals, taking his tally to 12 majors across the past two games.

Dom Brew led from the front with 25 disposals, a match-high 12 tackles, six clearances and a goal, while Mitch Lloyd produced one of his best performances for the club with match-high totals of 26 disposals and 15 marks in defence.

Port Melbourne advanced to the semi final after defeating Sydney by 55 points in Saturday’s elimination final at ETU Stadium.

The Borough finished sixth on the ladder before producing an emphatic performance against the seventh-placed Swans to keep their season alive.

Saturday will be the third meeting between Werribee and Port Melbourne this season, with the previous two encounters split at one win apiece.

Port Melbourne claimed a 26-point victory at ETU Stadium in Round 6, handing Werribee what would be its final loss until Round 20. Werribee responded when the two sides met again at Melbourne Avalon Airport Oval in Round 17, running out 38-point winners.

The two standalone clubs also share a rich finals history. Werribee secured its first premiership by defeating Port Melbourne in the 1993 Grand Final, with Saturday’s clash to be the third final between the sides since that famous decider.

The winner of Saturday’s second semi final will advance to face minor premier Geelong in the first preliminary final next weekend, while the losing side’s season will come to an end.

After a huge crowd attended Werribee’s qualifying final against Box Hill, supporters are again encouraged to pre-purchase tickets online before the game.

Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for concession and pension card holders, while children under 15 are free.
