Werribee’s Undefeated Streak Ends At Nine Matches

Tasmania snapped Werribee’s nine-game winning streak with a thrilling 12-point win in Hobart on Saturday.
In front of the biggest crowd Werribee has played in front of this season, and a heavily one-sided Tasmanian crowd at North Hobart Oval, the contest remained close throughout the afternoon before a late Werribee surge fell short, with the Devils winning 14.14.98 to 12.14.86.
Small forward Lachie Charleson was electric in his best game of the season, booting four goals, including several spectacular efforts that will be in Goal of the Year contention.
Mace Cousins (five marks, three intercept marks and four intercept possessions) and Sam Azzi (10 disposals, nine spoils and six intercepts) stood tall defensively, with Cousins earning Werribee’s Totally Workwear Player of the Match honours in the loss.
Jack Riding (22 disposals and eight tackles), Charlie Lazzaro (21 disposals and 12 contested possessions) and Louis Pinnuck (21 disposals and seven marks) led Werribee’s ball-winners in a game where the Devils recorded 375 disposals to Werribee’s 286.
Werribee dominated the hitouts, led by star ruckman Ajang Kuol Mun, who added another 32 to his season tally to go with 15 disposals, 11 contested possessions and seven clearances.
Caiden Gardiner, who came into the side as a late change for his VFL debut, also recorded 18 hitouts. The 206cm ruckman replaced Will Elliott, who missed his first game of the 2026 season.
Werribee made the perfect start at North Hobart Oval, with Charlie Lazzaro crumbing a goal off the goal line inside the opening minute.
The visitors booted three of the opening four goals, with Anthony Depasquale snapping one off the goal line before Ajang Kuol Mun nailed a set shot from the pocket to help Werribee take a four-point lead into quarter time.
Werribee again started quickly in the second term, with Tom Simpson snapping a classy goal inside the opening 30 seconds after a Jordan Busuttil holding-the-ball tackle from the opening ball-up.
Lachie Charleson got off the mark with a brilliant running snap from the boundary before Brady Wright showed his strength to add another two minutes later, extending Werribee’s lead to 21 points eight minutes into the term.
Tasmania responded with three consecutive goals before Charleson stopped their momentum with a spectacular effort over his head for his second of the quarter.
Werribee held a three-point advantage at the main break.
The Devils gained the upper hand in the third term, kicking three goals to two to take a four-point lead into three-quarter time. Much like the second quarter, Charleson and Wright were Werribee’s two goalkickers, with Tasmania leading 9.12.66 to 9.8.62 at the final change.
Tasmania kicked the opening two goals of the final term to stretch its advantage to 13 points before Charleson, who was keeping Werribee in the contest, produced another classy finish. This time, the small forward snapped truly off his opposite foot for his fourth goal of an electric afternoon.
The Devils then piled on three goals in quick succession to put Werribee on the back foot before Micah Robb snapped through his first goal in VFL football.
Werribee made it two goals in a minute when Noah Tullio burst out of the midfield and found Brady Wright inside 50. Wright took the mark, played on and finished from the goal line to keep Werribee’s hopes alive.
Werribee had another opportunity to bring the margin back under a goal with two minutes remaining, but the set shot went wide and Tasmania held on for a 12-point victory.
With second place on the ladder already sewn up, Werribee now turns its attention to the final game of the home-and-away season against Sandringham at Melbourne Avalon Airport Oval this Saturday, August 15 at 2:05pm.
