Premiership defender Jaelen Pavlidis is set to bring up his 50th game for the Werribee Football Club when he runs out in Saturday’s Round 19 clash against Footscray at Melbourne Avalon Airport Oval.

Saturday’s milestone carries extra significance for the Pavlidis family. Jaelen reaches the half-century mark at the same club where his father John became a Werribee life member after serving as a player (WFC #408), runner, welfare manager and recruiting manager.

The family connection runs deeper with younger brother Rani a train-on player at the club, making the milestone another proud chapter in the Pavlidis family’s long association with Werribee.

Jaelen joined Werribee ahead of the 2024 season from GWS, where he played 18 VFL games as a midfielder. He made an immediate switch to defence upon arriving at Melbourne Avalon Airport Oval and debuted in Round 1 against Geelong.

The local product wasted little time making an impression. Just three games in, he earned the Totally Workwear Player of the Match honours after collecting 20 disposals and seven marks in a win over Richmond. His early form reflected in the Bruce Montgomery Trophy count, which had Jaelen fourth after six rounds.

A hamstring injury against Port Melbourne in Round 18 interrupted an outstanding first season, but Pavlidis returned in time for the finals and played a key role in Werribee’s premiership run. He was named among the club’s best in the preliminary final victory over Brisbane before becoming a VFL premiership player just one day after his 21st birthday.

Pavlidis backed up his breakthrough campaign with another consistent season in 2025, playing 16 matches despite a concussion sustained midway through the year. His numbers improved across the board, averaging career highs for disposals, kicks and marks while recording the third-highest disposal efficiency at the club.

His 50th VFL game proved one of his finest, earning Totally Workwear Player of the Match honours after a standout defensive performance against Frankston.

Pavlidis hasn’t missed a game in 2026, and his latest milestone will come in his 16th appearance for the year, making the defender’s 68th VFL appearance his 50th in the black and gold.

Under first-year coach Daniel Lowther, Pavlidis has elevated his game again in 2026, producing the finest football of his career, averaging career highs of 19.9 disposals, 6.9 marks and four rebound 50s per game, while ranking among Werribee’s top three players for marks, intercepts, intercept marks and rebound 50s.

He has also enjoyed two rare scoreboard moments this season, kicking the first two goals of his Werribee career. His first came in Round 2 against Sandringham, launching home from beyond 50 on the run, before adding another against Frankston two weeks later.

Pavlidis also produced a career-best performance in Round 9 against Collingwood, finishing with personal bests of 29 disposals and 13 marks in Werribee’s victory.

Speaking with Star Weekly's Tara Murray ahead of the milestone, Pavlidis said reaching 50 games for the club he grew up around was something he was proud to achieve.

“I’m stoked to be honest. It has gone pretty quick over the last couple of years, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Reflecting on his connection with the club, Pavlidis said returning to Werribee carried special meaning after spending much of his childhood around the club.

“We just had our past players day, bringing back memories from those times.

“Seeing a few older boys like Dom Gleeson and Jarrod Mather, who I used to run around with as a little tacker, it was pretty special.”

Pavlidis said the milestone would also mean plenty to his family, who have supported him throughout his football journey.

“Dad doesn’t give much away. He’s obviously stoked as well as Mum; she’s ridden all the highs and lows.

“They’d be pretty proud, I would say.”

With younger brother Rani now also involved at the football club, Pavlidis said one day sharing the field together in the black and gold would be another special moment for the family.

“It’s been good having Rani down there and I try and teach him and get him to learn as much as possible so when his time comes, he is well prepared. It’s been a great experience just seeing him develop”

“It would be a massive milestone not only for myself, but for my mum and dad as well.”

Werribee returns from the bye looking to extend its winning streak to nine matches and reclaim the HealthWest Cup when it hosts Footscray at Melbourne Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The Round 19 clash gets underway at 12:05pm, with North Melbourne Werribee and the Western Bulldogs to follow in a VFLW clash from 2:30pm.

Back in the VFL's primetime ABC timeslot, the match will be broadcast live and free on ABC, giving supporters unable to make it to the ground the chance to tune in.
