In a tightly contested match, Werribee’s final-quarter surge blew the game open, leading to a 26-point victory over Brisbane at Melbourne Avalon Airport Oval.

The win improves Werribee's record to 7-3-1 and sees the side move into the top two on the VFL ladder for the first time this season. Werribee’s 12.16 (88) to 9.8 (62) victory also made it four wins in a row heading into the bye.

In his first game of the season, Anthony Depasquale starred up forward, kicking four goals from eight scoring shots to go with 18 disposals and seven marks.

Ajang Kuol Mun again provided his usual grit in the ruck, finishing with game highs of 35 hitouts and eight clearances to help spark Werribee's midfield.

Jack Riding lit up the contest with 24 disposals, three goals and five tackles in a standout performance.

The first goal of the afternoon came inside the opening 30 seconds, with strong tackle pressure from Jaelen Pavlidis forcing a turnover that set up Jake Smith, who converted on the run.

Riding soon added another, reading the play perfectly to gather the crumb and dribble through a classy left-foot goal.

He was at it again minutes later, snapping another major on the run after Jordan Busuttil intercepted Brisbane's defensive kick.

Brady Wright continued his strong run of form, converting a set shot from a difficult angle to extend Werribee's advantage.

The hosts dominated field position in the opening term, recording 15 inside 50s to Brisbane's eight to take a 19-point lead into quarter time.

Zane Keighran then found Depasquale on a strong lead, with the small forward converting for Werribee's fifth goal of the day.

Sharp ball movement from defence soon ended in Wright's hands, and he made no mistake with his second major to stretch the lead beyond three goals.

Depasquale added his second after pouncing on a loose ball at ground level and snapping truly.

Myles McCluggage then applied terrific forward pressure, earning a free kick for a tackle inside 50 before calmly converting his first goal of the season.

The second quarter was an even contest, with Werribee taking a 22-point lead into the main break.

Brisbane responded strongly after half-time, kicking the opening three goals of the third quarter to reduce the margin to just six points midway through the term.

Werribee's third quarter was one to forget in front of goal, managing seven behinds as the lead sat at just nine points at the final change.

The breakthrough finally came early in the last quarter when Cooper Whyte gathered possession near the boundary and delivered a superb goal on the run.

Depasquale continued his outstanding afternoon soon after, finding space in the pocket and converting his third major.

Louis Pinnuck then intercepted Brisbane's exit kick and delivered perfectly to Riding at the top of the goal square, who played on quickly and dribbled through his third.

Depasquale capped his return in style, crumbing the ball at ground level and snapping home his fourth goal of the afternoon.

Werribee finished strongly, kicking four of the last five goals of the match to secure a hard-fought 26-point victory and continue its strong run of form.

Werribee will now head into the bye before turning its attention to Carlton at Ikon Park on Saturday, June 27.
