Werribee crossed the halfway mark of its first season under coach Daniel Lowther sitting third on the VFL ladder after a 59-point win over Coburg.

Back at home on Saturday, Werribee trailed by four goals at quarter time before responding in emphatic fashion, kicking 16 of the next 19 goals to run away with the contest heading into Round 12.

Continuing his outstanding form, it was once again the Brady Wright show up forward. The second-year player booted five second-half goals, including three majors in the space of three minutes to start the final term.

Jake Smith earned his second Totally Workwear Hoppers Crossing Player of the Match nod of the season, finishing with 24 disposals and eight marks on the wing. Smith stood tall in the opening quarter with nine disposals as Werribee faced a 24-point deficit at the first break.

Rounding out Werribee’s best were Mace Cousins, who played an outstanding lockdown role on star forward Jayden Stephenson, Harry Grintell, who was lively up forward with 10 score involvements and a goal, and first-year midfielder Sam Donegan, who finished with 21 disposals and a game-high 11 contested possessions.

Coburg had all the play early, kicking the opening three goals of the game, but failed to fully capitalise on its dominance, booting 3.7 in the opening term to lead Werribee’s solitary behind by 24 points at quarter time.

After a gridlocked start to the second quarter, Sam Donegan laid a strong tackle inside 50 and converted the resulting set shot to finally get Werribee on the board. Moments later, Massimo Raso marked inside 50 straight from a centre clearance, again off the boot of Donegan, to make it two goals in as many minutes and bring the hosts back into the contest.

Cooper Whyte then made it three goals in a row, launching one home from 50 metres out on a tight angle.

Coburg's Sebastian Murphy responded with a goal before Harry Maguire got onto the board with a classy snap, set up by returning inclusion Myles McCluggage. Murphy added his second soon after, but Werribee had the final say of the half when Jake Smith intercepted a mark inside 50 and converted after the halftime siren to give the hosts momentum heading into the main break.

Brady Wright then wasted no time after halftime, running into an open goal to hand Werribee its first lead of the afternoon before converting a set shot 10 minutes later to extend the margin.

Coburg responded through Matthew Allison shortly after, but it proved to be the Lions’ final major of the day. Werribee closed out the third term with three unanswered goals as Maguire added his second, Will Elliott joined the party and Jordan Busuttil launched a major from the centre square to stretch the lead to 23 points at the final change.

Werribee produced its biggest quarter of the afternoon in the last, piling on six goals. Wright kicked three goals, all from set shots, in the space of three minutes and 59 seconds to open the term, before Busuttil and Raso both snapped home their second goals of the day.

The home side finished the match in style when Harry Grintell, in one of his best performances of the season, got on the end of a Myles McCluggage kick inside 50 and converted from the goal line to seal a 59-point victory.
