Werribee Enter Top Eight With Frankston Victory

05 May 2025

Werribee secured back-to-back wins for the first time in 2025 with a 39-point victory over Frankston on Saturday.

In their second of three consecutive home games at Melbourne Avalon Airport Oval, Werribee produced their most complete four-quarter performance of the season, leading at every break to post a 19.15.129 to 14.6.90 win over the Dolphins.

The club’s two leading goalkickers from last year’s premiership season were at their best on Saturday, with Hudson Garoni and Jay Dahlhaus combining for 11 goals.

Zac Banch was awarded Werribee’s Totally Workwear Player of the Match, racking up a remarkable eight score assists from 25 disposals—the equal most ever recorded in a VFL game. After the match, coach Jimmy Allan praised Banch’s impact: “He didn’t have his goalkicking boots on, but his pressure and work rate created countless opportunities for us. Not sure I’ve ever seen someone have eight direct score assists in a game before.”

Dom Brew continued his strong form in the middle with 13 clearances from 31 disposals, while ruckman Sam Conway was named among the best for the second week running with a dominant showing with 47 hitouts and 10 clearances.

For the third straight week, Werribee started fast, with two goals inside the opening six minutes. Key forward Hudson Garoni slotted the first of the day, followed by a Jack Riding right-foot snapping major.

A six-goal opening term, featuring two apiece from Garoni and Dahlhaus, saw Werribee head into quarter-time with an 18-point lead.

Frankston hit back in the second quarter and briefly took the lead late in the term, but Dahlhaus’ third goal, Werribee’s only other major after Jake Smith’s set shot earlier in the quarter, restored a four-point advantage just before the main break.

Werribee regained control in the third, with another burst from Dahlhaus (two goals) and Garoni (one), while Flynn Young continued his impressive early-season form by hitting the scoreboard.

The final quarter turned into a shootout, with the teams combining for 13 goals. Midfielders Jake Smith and Cooper Whyte both booted classy goals, Harry Maguire and Garoni added to their tallies, and Jack Riding put the finishing touches on the 39-point win.
