Werribee’s Matthew Hanson and Michael Sodomaco both remain in the frame to earn representative honours for a second straight year after being named by the VFL in its reduced state team squad.
The two are among just eight players with previous representative experience in the squad of 27, which has been trimmed back from an initial squad of 42 announced earlier in the month.
Named in the preliminary squad on the back of strong starts to the season, Hanson and Sodomaco have both carried on their rich vein of form in recent weeks.
Hanson is consistently rated one of the top midfielders in the competition and has continued to provide plenty of grunt through the middle. In the Tigers’ round-four win over Casey, he shook off a hard tag to produce a massive final quarter that earned him best-on-ground honours, racking up 10 disposals and four clearances to play a crucial hand in hauling his side over the line.
Sodomaco was also among Werribee’s best in its victory over the Demons, the Tigers’ captain showing his versatility by moving from defence to play a key midfield role.
The VFL state squad will be further reduced to a final team of 23 ahead of the clash with the WAFL on May 27 at North Port Oval.
