Werribee Back On Winners List With Victory Over Carlton

06 May 2024

Werribee are back on the winners list with a 32-point home victory over the Blue.

A commanding performance in the first half at Avalon Airport Oval enabled Werribee to secure a convincing victory. The final scores read Werribee 14.10 (94) to Carlton 9.8 (62), lifting Werribee to sixth place on the ladder.

Angus Hicks for the second week in a row got Werribee off to a fast start, kicking the first goal in the first minute. After Carlton drew even, quick goals to Jay Dahlhaus and Connor Thar courtesy of some Jack Riding individual brilliance, made it a 13-point lead at quarter time.

Hudson Garoni converted a tough set shot from the boundary line to maintain his streak of scoring in every game this season. Unfortunately his day came to an end shortly after. Garoni’s goal was followed by one from Flynn Young returning for his first game since Round 1 2023. He finished with two for the day. Three late goals gave Werribee a 32-point lead at the main break. Jack Riding playing across half forward led the way in the first half with 19-disposals.

Carlton kicked the first two goals of the third quarter however Werribee fought back with four consecutive majors extending the half-time lead. After an injury interrupted pre-season Kobe Annand returned for his first game of 2024 and kicked his second career goal while Jay Dahlhaus continued his impressive form with two goals and a mark of the year contender. Stand-in captain Dom Brew found his first goal of the 2024 season, a reward for his 33-disposal game.

Werribee’s first goal of the last term came from Angus Hicks his third of the game. The new recruit capping off a great month of form after earning the Totally Workwear Player of the Round in the defeat to Williamstown in Round 5. A late goal from Flynn Young put the icing on the cake to give Werribee a 32-point victory.

Jack Riding ended the day with 34 disposals, ten marks and ten inside 50s in a best-on-ground performance. Kye Declase was in the best for the fourth consecutive week, gathering 29-diposals and 10 marks. Half-backs Bior Malual and Riley Bice also provided plenty of run and carry all afternoon, picking up 23 and 22 disposals respectively.
