Werribee got off to the perfect start, kicking the opening goal inside the first minute through some brilliant unselfish play from Jake Riding, who set up Xavier Ivisic for the set shot finish.

After Tasmania responded with the next three goals, Wright steadied the ship with a booming set shot from beyond 50 metres.

Maguire then continued the shootout, gathering the crumb at ground level before snapping brilliantly off his non-preferred left foot from the boundary for Werribee’s third major.

In a high-scoring opening term, the Devils held a 14-point lead at quarter time after kicking six goals to four.

After missing four consecutive scoring shots, Werribee needed to capitalise on its opportunities in the second term, and did exactly that through Wright, who nailed back-to-back set shot goals to give the home side the lead for the first time since the opening minutes.

Brew burst forward from a clearance and launched the ball inside 50, where Maguire again read the drop of the ball perfectly before snapping through his second goal.

Kuol Mun continued his outstanding afternoon shortly after, marking strongly 25 metres directly in front and converting truly to go alongside his eight disposals and 18 hit outs midway through the second quarter.

Massimo Raso then finished off some slick ball movement from the back half as Werribee’s dominant second quarter extended the margin to 17 points.

Werribee controlled the term, outscoring Tasmania 5.6 (36) to 1.2 (8) to take a 16-point lead into the main break.

Will Elliott soared for a sensational mark early in the third term before handballing to Harry Grintell, who launched a long-range goal from 50 metres for his first major of the season.

Charlie Lazzaro then found Maguire at the top of the goal square for his third goal of the day, stretching the lead out to 20 points.

Tasmania fought back late in the quarter with the final two goals to reduce the margin to nine points at the final change, setting up a thrilling finish.

After conceding the opening three goals of the final term, Werribee needed a response, and Elliott delivered with a massive set shot goal from 55 metres out.

Moments later, Elliott showed brilliant ruck craft at ground level, grabbing the ball out of the ruck before snapping through another sensational major to restore a 15-point buffer.

Tasmania answered immediately, but Grintell’s forward pressure soon earned him a free kick directly in front, which he calmly converted.

Wright then produced a desperate goal-line save to deny what looked a certain Tasmania major in a crucial moment late in the match.

After a dramatic and seesawing final quarter, neither side could land the decisive blow, with the siren sounding on a thrilling 14.13 (97) apiece draw.

Werribee will now enjoy the bye before returning home to face Collingwood in Round 9 at Melbourne Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday, May 23 at 11:05am.
