Werribee Overrun In Second Half By Port Melbourne

Werribee’s season ledger has been evened at three wins and three losses following a 26-point defeat to Port Melbourne at ETU Stadium on Sunday.
In tough, scrappy conditions, the Borough took control after half time, breaking the game open in the third term.
While it was a challenging day for the visitors, Mace Cousins stood tall in defence. The reigning Best Defensive Player produced a strong lockdown performance on Port Melbourne’s Charlie Clark, while also collecting 14 disposals, five intercept possessions and four tackles.
Xavier Ivisic, in his third game for Werribee after arriving from Geelong’s AFL list, was one of the side’s better performers, finishing with 16 disposals including 10 contested possessions, along with four intercepts and four score involvements. Up forward, Brady Wright maintained his strong form, booting three goals for the second week in a row.
Wright got things underway early, converting Werribee’s first goal four minutes into the contest after being found in space inside 50 by Jack Riding. That would be the visitors’ only major of the opening term, as Port Melbourne responded with three goals in seven minutes to take a 14-point lead into quarter time.
The second quarter followed a similar pattern early, with Wright again striking first. He followed up his own work at ground level to kick the opening goal, before adding his third minutes later after a coast-to-coast passage saw him run into an open goal.
After Port Melbourne answered, Will Elliott converted from a set shot, before Noah Tullio, in a moment of class, sold candy off the back of a Brady Wright tackle and nailed a goal from 50 metres to give Werribee its first lead of the day.
The Borough regained the lead through Tom Hird, and despite a late behind to Sam Donegan after the siren, the sides went into the main break level.
Port Melbourne made the decisive move after half time, kicking the first two goals of the third term. Ajang Kuol Mun responded against his former side with a goal from close range, and Cooper Whyte soon followed with a set shot after a 50-metre penalty to level the scores once again.
From there, the Borough took control. Four unanswered goals late in the third quarter opened up a match-winning lead heading into the final term.
Each side kicked two goals in the last, with Jack Riding and Lachie Charleson adding their first majors of the afternoon, but the margin remained as Port Melbourne ran out 13.12 (90) to 9.10 (64) winners.
Werribee now returns home after two games on the road, hosting Tasmania at Melbourne Avalon Airport Oval this Saturday, May 9, with a 1:05pm start.
