Werribee Take Control In ANZAC Day Victory

Werribee held off Williamstown in their ANZAC Day clash away at DSV Stadium, with a dominant four-goal third term setting up the 14.13 (97) to 11.6 (72) victory.
The win sees Werribee move to 3–2 for the season, recording back-to-back victories and breaking into the top six for the first time this year, carrying strong momentum into the middle part of the campaign.
Sam Donegan led the way through the middle with 27 disposals and a game-high nine clearances, while alongside him Dom Brew applied immense pressure with 16 tackles to go with eight clearances. Louis Pinnuck was influential with 25 disposals, including 20 kicks, using the ball with his usual precision by foot.
Up forward, Brady Wright was a constant threat in the air, taking nine marks and finishing with three goals, while Will Elliott booted a game-high four majors in a strong performance.
Ajang Kuol Mun also delivered in the ruck, finishing with 27 hitouts and six clearances, while also kicking his first goal in Werribee colours.
Williamstown made the early running, kicking the opening two goals of the game and controlling territory with a strong inside 50 presence.
Werribee’s response came through Louis Pinnuck, who set up Brady Wright at the top of the arc for the side’s first goal, before majors to Jay Dahlhaus and Will Elliott saw the visitors hit the front at the 18-minute mark.
After weathering the early pressure, Werribee began to take control of territory, although missed opportunities in front of goal kept the margin tight, with the Bees taking a three-point lead into quarter time.
The second term saw Werribee build on that momentum. Strong forward pressure forced a turnover from Williamstown, allowing Harry Maguire to run into an open goal.
Wright continued his strong form with a contested mark and his second goal, while Maguire added another after being set up by Harry Grintell in his first game of the season, extending the lead to 11 points.
Wright’s third goal, again from a strong aerial contest, capped off a dominant period as Werribee controlled territory, heading into the main break with an 11-point lead despite a 31–14 advantage in inside 50s.
Werribee made the perfect start to the second half, with Elliott kicking his second goal inside the opening two minutes.
Jake Smith then produced a moment of brilliance, intercepting a Williamstown kick before launching a long-range goal from beyond 50.
Further goals to Elliott and Dahlhaus pushed the margin out to a game-high 32 points, with Werribee’s four goals to two in the third term opening up a 26-point lead at the final change.
Williamstown challenged in the final term, but Werribee steadied when it mattered. Elliott added his fourth from a snap out of a ruck contest, while Jack Riding made the most of his third opportunity after hitting the post twice earlier, finishing truly to help seal the result.
Kuol Mun capped off his performance late, taking a strong contested mark in the goal square and converting his first goal for the club.
Werribee will now turn their attention to an away clash with Port Melbourne at ETU Stadium on Sunday, May 3, with the game set to begin at 2:05pm.
