Werribee vice captain Matt Hanson will lead out a side featuring at least one debutante when the “big W” faces Coburg at Avalon Airport Oval on Saturday night in pursuit of back-to-back home wins to open season 2019.
Captain Michael Sodomaco and midfielder Baxter Norton have both been managed with lingering soreness from the weekend’s big victory over North Melbourne, giving three-time best-and-fairest winner Hanson the opportunity to assume the main leadership duties for the night.
With playing midfield coach Michael Barlow also an omission after undergoing surgery to repair a fractured jaw earlier in the week, Werribee will be required to field at least three changes against the Lions.
Ryley Barrack and Keegan Grey have been retained in the initial 27-man squad and so could both receive a call-up, though the remaining vacancy would still need to be filled a first-gamer.
Young versatile tall Tom Boyd remains in line for that opportunity after also holding his spot on the extended bench, but he has been joined there by fellow first-years Hudson Garoni, Aiden Domic, Ryan Kemp, and Alex Marklew, who will all be vying for a maiden game in the black and gold.
Emerging key forward Jake Riccardi will again line up as 23rd player for a fourth and final time.
