Practice match team: Werribee vs Geelong

Twelve new and prospective Werribee players will don the “big W” for the first time in match conditions tonight when their side hosts Geelong in its first practice game of 2019 and the first at Avalon Airport Oval in more than 10 years.

Former AFL listers Josh Clayton, Timm House, Max Spencer, and Jackson Edwards headline the list of first-timers among the 29-man squad that will square off under lights against a Cats side boasting the likes of Scott Selwood, Wylie Buzza, Ryan Abbott, and former Werribee ruckman Darcy Fort.

The match will also see playing midfield coach Michael Barlow back in the gold and black for the first time since departing the club in 2009 to embark on a 141-game AFL career with Fremantle and the Gold Coast.

He will join forces with returning three-time best-and-fairest winner Matt Hanson - sidelined with injury for much of 2018 - in what shapes as a tantalising engine-room combination.

The ex-North Melbourne AFL pair of Daniel Nielson and Oscar Junker, who both played at Avalon Airport Oval in 2017 through the former Kangaroos alignment, will also be back in Werribee colours, as will key-position utility Jake Riccardi, who played two games as 23rd player last season.

The match kicks off at 7:30pm. Entry is free.
