Werribee’s Development League side has gone down swinging with a spirited performance in its 24-point loss to the Northern Blues at a muddy Preston City Oval on Saturday.
Despite some missed early opportunities in front of goal, the Tigers started strongly to lead by 10 points at the first change, the Blues then getting on top as the heavens opened in the second term to take an eight-point advantage into the main break.
With the deficit out to 26 points by three-quarter time, it looked as though the Blues might be preparing to run away with the game.
But to its credit, Werribee refused to lie down, booting four final-quarter goals to three to double its tally from the final change and pare back the end margin.
In the unfamiliar role of ruckman, Matthew Brett was a clear standout for the Tigers, finishing with 38 hitouts, 21 disposals, and a goal.
Spiros Amarantidis, Jay O’Donoghue, and the returning Jordan Jones were all important in helping Werribee get on top of the clearances in the centre-square mudpit, the latter racking up an impressive 17 disposals and seven clearances despite being managed after half time.
Aiden Adams provided a key presence up forward for the Tigers, finishing as his side’s only multiple goal scorer, while Daniel Foley (22 disposals) and Jack Williams (21 disposals) both found plenty of the footy running out of defence.
Werribee will now prepare for an emotional farewell match against the Casey Demons on Saturday in what will be the final ever home-and-away round of the AFL Victoria Development League.
