The occasion of Nathan Laracy’s 100th club game wasn’t enough to lift Werribee’s Development League side to a win on Sunday, the Tigers going down to Williamstown by 17 points at Burbank Oval after a brave fightback.
In a game of significant momentum swings that largely rode on the infamous Point Gellibrand wind, the visitors trailed the Seagulls by 41 points approaching half time before hitting back hard with a run of seven straight goals to take a five-point lead into the final change.
With the two sides having played out a draw back in round six before Werribee notched its maiden victory with a five-point win in their round 10 rematch, the stage looked set for another nail-biter.
But the home side proved too strong in the close, making the most of the breeze in the final term to kick the last four goals of the game.
Brydon Hodgson was named best afield for the Tigers, finishing with 23 disposals and six clearances, while Brad Xavier was also a standout, providing a strong marking presence up forward.
In his milestone match, Laracy was also among his side’s best, finishing with 16 disposals out of defence.
Werribee now turns its attention to the remaining two games of the final season of the Development League, beginning with Saturday’s clash with the Northern Blues at Preston City Oval.
