Rd 19 v Casey Match Report

It’s a Long Way to the Top

The task of playing the top side in the competition is always challenging, and for the Werribee Tigers, Casey at Casey Fields was the assignment last Sunday. Losing captain Michael Sodomaco pre game to an injury was not the perfect preparation for the day. Casey bristled with AFL experience, and showed that right from the start of the game. To the Tigers credit they were up and about, and made every contest count, and when the siren sounded at quarter time the margin was a very competitive 13 points.

Tigers head coach John Lamont was satisfied with the effort.

“They had the advantage of a slight breeze in the first quarter. We missed a few opportunities, which has been the story of the season so far, but I was reasonably happy.”

Casey started to show why they are the VFL ladder leaders in the second term gaining control of the game. Key injuries to three of Werribee’s defenders did not help the Tigers cause, and the Scorpions took full advantage on the scoreboard.

Lamont gleaned many positives from the loss.

“I thought we played with good spirit and hung in there. It was a really tough second half. It was a real test and our boys didn’t throw the towel in. There was much more merit in this loss than say the Geelong game. Blokes kept pushing through pain, soreness and fatigue. They cramped due to no rotations, and they were up against the top team, who had hundreds of games of AFL experience. Our boys stuck to task really well and kept trying. They were a bit dejected after the game, getting done by 100 points, but we spoke about a never give up attitude and they certainly produced that. We are out of finals now, but we want to finish off well in the two games left at home.”

Werribee play Footscray Sunday at Avalon Airport Oval at 12 Noon followed by the VFL Women’s game between Melbourne Uni and Darebin at 3pm.
