Rd 18 v Box Hill Match Report

Not a Complete Loss for the Tigers

The Tigers travelled to Box Hill Oval confident of a good showing based on their recent record against last year’s grand finalists, and on the back on two wins in a row. Both sides will not be in finals this year which is a scenario neither is accustomed to, so pride was on the line.

It was an entertaining start with both sides kicking 5 goals in the first quarter, the home team with a narrow three point lead at the break. An even second quarter saw the margin doubled (to 6 points) so an exciting second half was in store. Box Hill had other ideas and turned the game on its head with a scoring onslaught, adding 6 goals 8 to the Tigers 1 goal 1 point. The Tigers did win the last quarter but never really threatened the Hawks supremacy. The winning margin was 37 points and the Beyond Blue Cup now resides in the trophy cabinet at Box Hill.

Head coach John Lamont took a lot of positives from the game.

“There was a good feeling at half time. We reset ourselves, but Box Hill came out and grabbed the early momentum and initiative and we just couldn’t get it back. They set the win up in the third, it was the old premiership quarter. We are certainly playing better footy now than a few weeks back. We just have to try and maintain that for the last three games. We gave some blokes specific roles on Saturday and they did their job. We changed a few things around, like putting Nick Meredith, who has played down back all year, up forward and we were happy with that. We have a few things to work on, like giving up late in quarters, we want to arrest that. In the next three weeks we will tweak a few things and continue to develop some game plan options and try a few thing tactically as well.”
