Rd 15 v Geelong Match Report

Tigers mauled by Cats

After a competitive start to the game it was another forgettable afternoon for the Werribee Tigers when they took on Geelong last Saturday at Simonds Stadium. The team seemed up and about for Scott Sherlock’s 100th game and were only 8 points down at the first break. Unfortunately the flood gates opened in the second quarter, as a Cats side boasting 16 listed AFL players went on an 8 goal to zero scoring spree. A further 8 in the third term to Werribee’s 1, sealed a massive margin for the home team. Some consolation goals in a meaningless last quarter little solace for the black and gold.

Senior coach John Lamont summed up the performance.

“We just lost all confidence after they kicked a few in the second quarter. We were really disappointing when we had the ball. We couldn’t absorb Geelong’s pressure and continually coughed the ball up”

The Tigers have not won since round 6, and while it is still mathematically possible for the team to make the final eight, that is not the focus for Lamont and his staff or players.

“All we can do is get back on the training track, communicate to the players and get individual improvement and as a collective unit. We have just got to get the basics right. As a coaching group and a playing group we must work together to get some positives out of this next phase of games. We need to get a couple of wins so we finish the year in a positive way. We need to develop some young guys, give them an opportunity”

The Tigers play North Ballarat this Saturday at Avalon Airport Oval starting at 2pm. The development league game against Box Hill Hawks will precede the main game at 11am.
