Rd 10 v Richmond Match Report

No Joy in this Tigers Victory

The VFL Tigers went into the clash with the AFL Tigers with a 100% winning record against the boys from Punt Road, and after two losses in a row were keen to get back on the winners list. Unfortunately things did not go to plan. Another slow start saw the Werribee Tigers playing catch up footy all day.

It was another disappointing day for senior coach John Lamont.

“We just didn’t capitalize on our chances and our opportunities early in the game. We made too many skill errors and the players were not working together. We had two players jumping for the same ball type of stuff. We had the ball in our forward area enough but we turned it over, and then didn’t defend well enough. We were behind all day by 3 or 4 goals.”

Some half time changes saw Werribee keep Richmond goalless in the third quarter, but they failed to take advantage of that by scoring themselves, and only narrowed the margin by 2 points. Trailing by 30 points going into the last quarter was always going to be a big ask.

“We swung Lachie Hansen forward in the last quarter and he kicked three, and we changed some other things as well. We got to within 17 points and got a bit of a sniff, but then we could not go on with it. The general effort was there, blokes are trying but not working well enough together as a team. We had too many skill execution errors which makes it look like we are over possessing the ball."

"We are 4 and 4 (wins/losses). We have asked the playing group to take a reality check about our game, as individuals and how we are coming together as a group. That will be our focus at the start of this week.”

Werribee return to Avalon Airport Oval this Saturday to face Essendon who they defeated in round one. The senior game will be televised on Channel 7 from 2pm. There has been a change to the development league fixture with Werribee now playing Casey Scorpions after the senior game at 7.00pm.
