Tigers Get Halfway There
Top spot was the prize on offer for Werribee if it could defeat Collingwood at the unusual starting time of 11am last Sunday at Victoria Park.
For a half it looked like the boys from the other side of the bridge were going to smiling. After a slow start they went to the half time break 20points up. By no means a comfortable margin, but enough to suggest they were in the driver’s seat. They went from Driving Miss Daisy to the Titanic in the blink of an eye.
Head coach John Lamont had gold class seats in the coaches box.
‘We had a good second quarter, kicking 7 goals to 2 to set up a nice little buffer, we had worked hard for. We had been disciplined and stuck to what we were supposed to be doing and then it just fell apart pretty quickly. Collingwood came out more alert and the dynamics of the game changed. Three goals in three minutes, and then we made mistakes and went back into our shells We couldn’t get our hands on the ball and when we did we turned it over”.
Werribee managed a meagre 2 points for the quarter to10 goals 3 for Collingwood. The game was essentially gone, especially with Currie, Redfern and Leigh Addams to take no further part in the game.
“What it ends up becoming is a learning opportunity for us now. We have to make sure that this doesn’t happen again. The game review will be principally around that third quarter. How did we get ourselves into that position of being 20 points up, to being 40 points down? What happened? What were you feeling and what were you thinking? We will get some feedback from the runners and coaches who were at ground level. We have to come up with a system to stem the flow when the opposition gets a run on. It was terribly disappointing because there were 4 points to be won, and we blew it”
This week Werribee head to Ikon Park to take on the Northern Blues. The Development side starting at 11.15 and the Seniors at 2.15pm. The Development side storming home with 5 goals to nil in the last quarter to get the points over Frankston last Saturday.
