HOW IT HAPPENED

Werribee found itself reeling after Port Melbourne sent home the first eight goals of the game to hold a 50-point lead early in the second quarter. Not until a strong contested mark and goal to Timm House at the 10-minute mark of the second term did Werribee open its account, but it sparked a revival that saw the visitors boot four straight and six of the next seven goals to close the margin to 21 points at the main break.

The Borough again pushed out the margin with three straight goals after half time before second majors to both Matt Munro and Jack Henderson helped bring the margin back to 21 points at the final change. A goal to Nick Coughlan and a third to Munro to open the last quarter had Werribee within 15 points, but that was as close as it would come, the two sides going goal for goal over the closing minutes as the Borough found a response for each Werribee offensive.

FROM THE COACH

“We did pretty well to work out way back into the game, but it was a pretty ordinary start. One of our players made the comment during the first quarter that there was a higher intensity and the heat was on at a higher level than any game we’ve played, and to be honest, we looked like we weren’t quite ready for it.”

Werribee ruck / assistant midfield coach Jack Fitzpatrick
