Werribee was unable to hold off a fast-finishing Geelong in its opening practice match of 2019 and the first at home in more than 10 years, going down to the Cats by 15 points under the Avalon Airport Oval lights on Friday night.
Werribee: 4.1 7.2 8.3 9.4 (58)
Geelong: 3.3 7.3 7.6 11.7 (73)
Werribee: Munro 2, Augerinos 2, Riccardi 2, Pinnuck, Gribble, Declase
Geelong: Smith, Tsitas 3, Buzza, Fort, Gow, Lang, Byrne
Geelong: Abbott, Tsitas, Fort, Smith, Wilson, Buzza
After an early arm wrestle that saw small forward Matthew Munro in the thick of the scoring action with two goals, Werribee skipped out to a 22-point lead early in the second quarter as Max Augerinos slotted his second and Louis Pinnuck and Tom Gribble got in on the scoring act to give the home side three consecutive goals. But four straight majors to the Cats – two to captain James Tsitas and then two to Luke Smith – saw them snatch a one-point lead entering the main break.
As the scoring dried up through the third quarter, only Jake Riccardi was able to add to the goal tally, booting his second to give the hosts back the lead, which Kye Declase capitalised on with the first of the last. But Geelong soon found its groove again, sending home the last four goals of the game to again take the lead and run out 15-point winners.
