The excitement is building as the Werribee Football Club prepares to cut the ribbon on its first home game at the new-look Avalon Airport Oval @ Chirnside Park – and what a night it promises to be.
President Martin Carter will host a full house in the pre-game president’s dinner, which will feature guests from the many organisations linked to the redevelopment.
Among the attendees at the debut night of the new Chirnsides by the River function centre will be federal member for Lalor Joanne Ryan; Wyndham Mayor Peter Maynard; councillors Kim McAliney, Henry Barlow, Mia Shaw, and Heather Marcus; and all six living club legends – David Lyons, Bruce Montgomery, Eddie Marriott, Greg Anderson, John Comben, and Kerryn O’Brien.
The Werribee Concert Band will be performing several songs on the ground pre-game before Nicole Condos performs the national anthem just before the first bounce at 7pm.
Best known for appearing on stage with Madonna, Nicole has sung the anthem at the Essendon District Football League grand finals in recent years.
She also has strong ties to Avalon Airport Oval; her brother James played for the club, while her father, Nick, is a former assistant coach.
Pauline Nicol – wife of the late John Nicol, the club’s longest serving president and one of the prime movers behind the redevelopment – will toss the coin before the match.
There is also a very important game of football at 7pm: Werribee vs Casey Demons.
