The Werribee Football Club is delighted to confirm the induction of Club Legend David Lyons to the ranks of VFL life member.
Lyons was one of eight new VFL life members inducted at last night’s VFL Best and Fairest at Crown Palladium, joining the likes of club greats Donald McDonald, Michael Martin, James Podsiadly, Nathan Saunders, Simon Atkins, and the late Ray Smith and John Nicol as life members of the VFL and former VFA.
A member of the Tigers’ inaugural under 19s side in 1965, Lyons joined the senior ranks the following year, setting a club record of 126 games and kicking 181 goals between 1966 and 1971 and in 1977.
Since hanging up the boots, he has remained active in Werribee’s off-field affairs, serving an initial term on the board from 1993 to 1998 as well as a three-year stint as chairman of selectors and a two-year stint as runner under coach Leon Harris.
In 2003, David rejoined the board in his current role of treasurer, and he has been instrumental in eradicating the club’s debts and elevating it to its present-day position of financial strength.
“It was very special, particularly having Carol and people like Greg Welsh, Mark Penaluna, and Martin Carter there,” Lyons said of the presentation.
“I’m really grateful to Werribee for the nomination.”
He added it was the people at the club that had inspired him to remain involved for more than 50 years.
“I’ve been very fortunate that in my time, the club has always had the ability to produce great people,” he said.
“There have been people like Bruce Montgomery, who was on the board when I first joined and was a huge influence on me and who kept the club going through his tenacity.
“Then Greg Welsh came along, and then when the club was starting to struggle again, up popped Mark Penaluna. These are the sorts of people who have made the club what it is.
“When I think about my time at the club, I think more of the off-field than the on-field now. Your playing life is relatively short, and yet there are people who have stuck with the club for 30 or 40 years beyond that.”
The Werribee Football Club congratulates David Lyons on his induction and thanks him for his years of service to the club, the Victorian Football League, and the former Victorian Football Association.
