Coming Soon - Leaving our mark- The first 50 years of the Werribee Football Club.
‘I had a pretty good year in ’71, I was playing ruck rover so I was getting a fair bit of the ball and I thought I would be there or thereabouts (for the best and fairest). I won the Bridge Hotel Award as well. We had some good players like John Comben, Jimmy Burke was a young player coming through, and Bruce Montgomery had a good year as well”
John remembers Bruce Comben was something of a conspiricist as a coach “ He was funny he’d be out on the ground at three quarter time and he’d be worried who was listening, he thought someone might be able to sneak secrets back to the other side. He didn’t have any great strategies or anything but he did look at the opposition. I remember one day we were paying Brunswick and he said to me they have a guy an up and coming player, I want you to get on him and give him one. You know get into him sort of thing. So I followed instructions and the Brunswick players they came after me from all angles. That up and coming player was future Brownlow Medalist Keith Greig”
