Avalon Airport Oval will host its first ever AFL Women’s game next year when the newly launched Kangaroos side takes on Adelaide on Sunday, March 3.
The AFL today released its fixture for the 2019 AFLW season, confirming Werribee’s home ground as the venue of choice for what will be the Kangaroos’ only Victorian home game.
The news is perhaps the biggest endorsement yet of Avalon Airport Oval, which has quickly established itself as an in-demand elite football venue since the completion of its $11.75 million redevelopment in April.
In addition to Werribee’s 10 VFL home games this year, the ground also hosted North Melbourne VFL games and TAC Cup girls’ and boys’ games, among them the TAC Cup girls’ grand final.
Werribee CEO Mark Penaluna said the club was thrilled its new-look home would get its first taste of AFLW action.
“Hosting an AFLW fixture provides us with a wonderful chance to showcase Wyndham’s premier sporting and events venue, and we’re very grateful to the AFL for providing us with that opportunity,” Mr Penaluna said.
